A slightly belated welcome to the New Year from the Committee of the JSD.
VICTOR BOOTH
Sadly I have to report that Victor Booth, stalwart member of the JSD and the ‘Timber’ community of the Engineering Profession passed away on the 12th December 2011.
Victor was a past Chairman and Treasurer of the JSD.
Victor was a regular at the monthly Technical meetings, collecting the donations - he was sharp and nobody got away without paying.
Victor made an enormous contribution to the engineering profession both in committee and on the broader front. Although his particular field was timber he was very astute in being able to comment and advise on other disciplines. He represented the JSD, debating some of the thorny issues that were facing the profession, with incredible skill.
Our condolences go to Hillary and the family.

- Admission requirements for JSD members to SAICE or IStructE
The month of January has almost passed - but not uneventfully.
On the 13th January I was privileged to attend the Institution of Structural Engineers Council meeting and incoming Presidential inauguration in London.
John Nolan has become the 92nd President of the Institution of Structural Engineers
John Nolan
John Nolan began his career in the industry as a labourer, graduated from Lanchester Polytechnic in 1974 and obtained a Masters from Warwick University in 1978.
His previous experience includes RM Douglas Construction, Farebrother and Partners (Associate) Cameron Taylor (Director) and is currently Chairman of Nolan Associates Consulting Engineers which he co-founded in 1993.
Discussions between all of the parties congregating from around the world were interesting, valuable and focussed on the common goals of excellence in Structural Engineering.
I would anticipate placing the highlights from the meeting into the next Newsletter, following receipt of the minutes.
The first JSD committee Meeting was held on the 24th January – followed by a lunch at which we were honoured to have three special guests join with us
Dr Martin Van Veelen – incoming President - SAICE
Manglin Pillay, CEO, SAICE
Dr Hennie de Clercq CEO, SAISC.
I shall place a short profile of Dr Van Veelan following his inauguration scheduled for 23rd February.
There have been some small adjustments to the committee – hence its repeat, at the bottom of this Newsletter – all details may be found on the website.
The committee has taken on the task of ensuring that the JSD enhances its relevance in the following areas
One key element in achieving the above objectives will be via enhanced communications.
The JSD website is continually evolving whilst that of the ISE has recently undergone a major revamp which was launched on the 9th January.
I would earnestly request that you pop along the links to view the changes.
Membership of the Joint Structural Division is free and open to both SAICE and IStructE members.
The full international advantages of membership of the Division are however, confined to those who are members of both Institutions. To this end IStructE offers a discount of 45% on its membership subscriptions to those of its members who are also members of SAICE.
Previous amendments to SAICE’s Constitution and IStructE’s Charter, as well as the international agreements between the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) and the Engineering Council (ECUK) facilitate full membership.
Please see the website for full details of obtaining the IStructE membership: the international passport for those engaged in structural engineering
Kind Regards
