The aim of the association is to exchange knowledge
and to advance the practice of structural engineering world-wide in the
service of the profession and society.
The association
has the following objectives:
- to
promote cooperation and understanding among all those concerned with
structural engineering
and related fields by worldwide exchange of knowledge and experience
- to
encourage awareness and responsibility of structural engineers towards
the needs of society
- to
encourage actions necessary for progress in structural engineering
- to
improve and foster cooperation and understanding between organisations
having similar objectives
For this purpose, the Association may:
- organise
conferences by itself or in collaboration with other organisations
- encourage
and conduct continuing education programmes
- identify
research and development needs
- initiate
and support research activities
- confer
awards for structural engineering achievements

Events
: IABSE Days in South Africa 2010 
The South African Group of IABSE is organizing an IABSE
Day in three cities where interesting structural engineering projects will
be presented. The purpose of the IABSE
days is to :
-
expose South African structural engineers and
architects to international projects of interest
-
provide South African structural engineers with a
platform to present their projects
-
increase the profile of IABSE in South Africa
-
bring some to South Africa some of the
presentations made at the annual IABSE Symposium held in Bangkok in September
2009
The IABSE
Days will be held on the following dates :
- Cape Town 19 March 2010
- Durban 23 March 2010
- Johannesburg 25 March 2010
The preliminary program includes
presentations on :
- Stonecutters bridge (Hong Kong)
- Structural Fire design
- Bridge erection in congested urban environment
- Structural use of glass
- FIFA 2010 stadium
- La Merci Airport Durban
