Working together to look after the interests and
development of Structural Engineers both in South Africa
and internationally.

The New National Building Regulations SANS 10400 (2006) about to be published
now requires certification by a COMPETENT PERSON – STRUCTURES.

There is a concern in South Africa and likewise internationally, where legislation is not specific to a structural engineering specialist category. There are instances where Professional Engineers and Professional Engineering Technologists, not competent in Structural Engineering, are assuming structural engineering competency and certifying structural stability of buildings. To assist in recognizing and differentiating those Structural Engineers that are competent, the Joint Structural Division of the SAICE and Institution of Structural Engineers, are establishing a Peer Reviewed List of such persons. This list will be accessible on the web such that municipalities and client bodies can obtain direct reference. It will also assist in identifying Structural Engineers throughout Southern Africa and their specialist activities.

We look forward to further consolidation and enhancement of the Structural Engineering Profession within Southern Africa.
