Working together to look after the interests and
development of Structural Engineers both in South Africa
and internationally.

The Joint Structural Division is dedicated to looking after the professional interests
and developments of Structural Engineers and public safety in the built environment. Our image is one of safety, efficiency and excellence in both our operations and in the standards of our members.

Structural engineering is the science and art of designing and making, with economy and elegance, buildings, bridges, frameworks, and other similar structures so that they can safely resist the forces to which they may be subjected.

Introduction

The Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) is the world's leading professional body for structural engineering with over 22,000 members in 105 countries around the world. It is a leading source of expertise on all structural engineering and public safety issues in the built environment.

IStructE is recognized internationally for its technical and professional competence of its members. It qualifies its members by assessing their professional competence in structural engineering.

Qualifying examinations for membership were introduced in 1920 around the same time as the first regional branches were formed. In 1937 the South Africa Branch became the first to be established outside the UK. Currently there are 32 Branches, Divisions and Sections across the world, reflecting and supporting the global spread of IStructE's membership.
